When Dylan recorded his first electric songs for 1965’s ‘Bringin’ It All Back Home’ at Columbia’s Studio A, Daniel Kramer was present to document the historic occasion.
Dylan in Woodstock in 1964. His manager, Albert Grossman, had a house in the tiny upstate hamlet, and Dylan spent much of his free time there, eventually buying a home of his own.
Kramer tagged along to a New York City clothing store with Dylan in 1965. It’s clear Dylan was drawing some fashion inspiration from Phil Spector, even if he never admitted it.
Dylan playing a solo acoustic set at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey on November 7, 1964. Six years later, Dylan received an honorary doctorate from Princeton. He chronicled the experience in his song “Day of the Locusts.”
On October 31, 1964, Dylan played a concert at New York’s Philharmonic Hall. “It’s just Halloween,” he told the crowd. “I have my Bob Dylan mask on. I’m masquerading.” Baez came out to sing “Mama, You’ve Been On My Mind,””Silver Dagger,” “With God On Our Side,” and “It Ain’t Me Babe.” This photo shows them backstage before the show.
Dylan’s growing fame made it difficult for him to move about freely in New York City. The seclusion of Woodstock, where he’s seen in this 1964 photo, became very alluring. Three years later, he’d record ‘The Basement Tapes’ in the nearby town of Saugerties, New York.
Daniel Kramer’s final photo session with Dylan took place August 28, 1965, at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in Forest Hills, New York. It was only the second time Dylan played with electric backing following the Newport Folk Festival a month earlier. This is a candid, offstage shot from that day.
